Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
General Questions
A vignette is a toll fee for using the Austrian motorway network. It is mandatory for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and is managed by ASFINAG.
There are three vignette types: the annual vignette (approx. 14 months), the 2-month vignette and the 10-day vignette. Each is available as digital or sticker vignette (except motorcycle vignettes, which are digital only).
Yes, the vignette requirement applies to all vehicles regardless of country of origin. Foreign drivers must have a valid vignette before using Austrian motorways.
No, the vignette requirement only applies to motorways and expressways subject to the vignette system. Federal roads, regional roads and municipal roads are toll-free.
Purchase and Payment
Vignettes are available: online (ASFINAG website), at petrol stations, tobacconists, ÖAMTC/ARBÖ offices and at border crossings. For more information, see our Service Area page.
Yes, the digital vignette can be purchased up to 18 days in advance. The start date can be freely chosen.
Online: credit card (Visa, Mastercard), debit card, PayPal. In person: cash and card. Available payment methods may vary by sales point.
Attachment of the Sticker Vignette
The sticker vignette must be attached to the inside of the windscreen, in the top left corner (driver's side). It must be clearly visible from outside.
No, the vignette is vehicle-specific and cannot be transferred. A sticker vignette that has been attached loses its validity when removed.
Exceptions to the Vignette Requirement
Exempt vehicles include: vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (subject to section toll), emergency vehicles (police, fire brigade, ambulance), diplomatic vehicles and vehicles with special exemption permits.
This depends on the rental agreement. Many Austrian rental cars already have a vignette. Check with the rental company. If not, you must purchase one yourself.
Fines and Appeals
The minimum fine is €120, the maximum fine is €3,000. You will also need to purchase a vignette. For more details, see our Policies page.
Yes, you can appeal in writing within 4 weeks of receiving the penalty notice. Contact the authority named in the notice. For more information, see our Policies page.
